Do Children Deserve Autonomy?

Children as well as adults have human rights, in fact, society has decided in many instances that children have an additional right to special protection because of their vulnerability to exploitation and abuse. At the same time, we deny children much autonomy. As adults we make decisions that will impact the lives of the children around us in very real ways. We make decisions that will change the world for unborn humans.

Is it possible that in our attempts to protect children from exploitation we have also denied their rights in other ways? We circumcise young children, we tickle children against their will, we force young humans into a circadian rhythm that is not suited for their needs. Can we honestly say that we do this for their betterment? Perhaps so, perhaps not..
